Attendance and Absences

Regular school attendance is essential if students are to receive maximum benefits from the school program. Excused absences are only for reasons of personal illness, death or serious illness in the immediate family, religious holidays, service as a page in the General Assembly of Georgia, or instances in which attendance could be hazardous as determined by the DeKalb School System. Georgia law classifies all other absences as unexcused or illegal.

Six unexcused absences by a student will automatically generate a letter and phone call from DeKalb County. Any student with eight unexcused absences will be referred by the county to a social worker.

Parents should contact the school if possible when student is or is expected to be absent.

Students are expected to make-up work when absent (see page 15 for details). When your child returns to school after an absence, he or she must bring a note from the parents/guardians explaining the reason for the absence.
