Volunteering

Parent involvement is the foundation of Kingsley's Charter, which is why parents of Kingsley Charter School students commit to serve at least 16 service hours per year when they sign the Parent Contract.  Why? This commitment is in place because research has proven time and time again that students whose parents are involved in the school perform better academically.

Service Hour Descriptions

Active participation is actual work performed, regardless of the location of the work. Work is awarded service hours based on the actual time worked.

Work in school: Two hours of work is counted as two service hours.  There are opportunities in the classroom, library, clinic, parent headquarters, office, music room, art room, P.E./Gym, etc.  There are also opportunities throughout the year to work at various events.  Some examples of events where work is available are Parent Meetings, Clean-Up Days, Fall Festival, Pizza Bingo, etc.  If both parents work at an event, they are each awarded hours for the time worked.  For example, if both parents work a booth at Fall Festival for two hours, they would be approved to log four service hours for that work.

Work outside of school: When working on a project for a teacher or the Council, it is recommended for all parties to agree to how long the project is expected to take.  Hours are awarded based on the actual time the project takes.

Attending an Event: Service hours will be given for attendance at certain events as determined by the Council.  Attendance is NOT considered active participation (a.k.a. work).  Each FAMILY may receive ONE (1) service hour for attendance at Parent Meetings, Workshops, Open House, Fall Festival, Pizza Bingo, Sock Hop, etc.  It is the Council’s stand that parents and families benefit from attending these events and should attend for that reason.

Service hours are NOT awarded for:
  • attendance at Parent/Teacher conferences (per the contract, these are required)
  • lunch with your child at school
  • donation of items - tax receipts are available for donations and service hours may be awarded for the time worked i.e. the time spent purchasing an item and bringing it to the school.  Hours are only awarded to parents or guardians for their work, not their employees work.

The Council will make every effort to post service opportunities in K12 and communicate them in the weekly eCourier newsletter. Parents are responsible for logging service hours in the K12 Ambit tool.  Any dispute about what constitutes a service hour should be brought to the Council.
